“No,” said the bodyguard.
“But—”
“Miss, do you have any idea how many people try to get backstage by claiming they have some sort of relationship with Mr. Dillon?” Face a careful blank, the man in the slick black suit stared down at me. He had a point. I’d pushed through a crush of fans, getting my toes stomped on several times, along with taking an elbow to the kidney, just to talk to this guy. God only knew what it took to get near the star of the show.
“I’d imagine a lot,” I yelled back at him. Necessary given the volume of the music filling the space. “The difference here is I’m not lying.”
“But since everyone says that, you can see from my perspective how that’s not actually a point of difference.”
Adam Dillon, rock star extraordinaire, gyrated his slim denim-clad hips like an Alt-Rock Elvis on the nearby stage. He pouted and crooned about the woman who’d done him wrong. Me. That’s right, I was the big bad ex who’d broken him and woke him to the dangers of love. Or so the song said.
The song lied and then some.
According to the lyrics he was currently wailing, I’d ground his heart beneath my five-inch heels before blowing him a kiss goodbye. From memory, there’d been a lot of shouting, but no blowing of kisses. And having just kicked off the flats I wore for work, I’d been barefoot, my legs and back aching. No way had I been strutting around in stilettos. Home from a hard day at the hair salon, I’d returned to find Adam on the couch. The same place he’d been when I’d left for work approximately eleven hours earlier. The same place he’d been for what felt like months as I worked my ass off to pay the rent. That’s when all hell broke loose. However, it wasn’t the only issue that had caused our relationship to bomb. Nothing’s ever simple.
But back to the here and now. I grabbed the slip of paper out of my front pocket, holding it up for his perusal. “My name is Jill Schwartz. How many of those people claiming to know him have one of these?”
His eyes widened as he scanned the name on the check, before widening again at the amount. And fair enough too. I’d had a mild panic attack myself when it had first arrived. When Adam decided to make a statement, he didn’t bother with subtle. If only I could figure out what it all meant. If it meant anything at all, of course. And that question was what had brought me here tonight.

“Your keys and security alarm code please, miss?” he asked, hand held out waiting.

It might have just been me, but we seemed to be standing awfully close together. It almost seemed weirdly intimate. Almost. No, my bad. Ziggy wore his usual professional façade with nary a hint of emotion on display. His gaze was shuttered, his bearing military rigid. It was definitely just me and my overactive imagination. Being vaguely attracted to your bodyguard was kind of a pain in the ass. Not that I couldn’t use the distraction right now.

Ziggy continued to stand there patiently waiting.

“Keys. Right.” I rummaged inside my Balenciaga City bag. Designer goodies were not only a weakness of mine, but a happy perk of being in the industry and achieving some small fame. “Ah, just a minute. They’re in here somewhere.”

I pushed aside my purse, a cashmere shawl, tampons, a candy bar, some loose change, my small Chanel cosmetics case, a power bank, hair ties, pepper spray, a copy of the latest Sarah MacLean book, mints, a spare charging cable for my cell phone, the cell phone itself, Chapstick, Prada sunglasses case, my grandma’s rosary, dental floss, deodorant, a couple of pens, Kleenex, ear buds, water bottle, a USB stick, reusable straw, condoms, nail file, some old receipts, a travel size umbrella, hand sanitizer, lotion, a pair of pearl earrings, tweezers, Advil, a hair band, and some bobby pins.

“Sorry about this,” I murmured. “I know I put them in here when we left.”

He said nothing. A whole lot of nothing.

“Huh.” With a great sense of victory, I held up a bottle of nail polish. “I thought I’d lost this.”

One of his dark brows crept upwards.

“I’ll have you know this color was limited edition. Little Death at Midnight by Oxley. You can’t buy it anymore.”

His lips did not move, but that damn eyebrow arched even higher as he leaned forward a little and took in the contents of my bag. I swear his eyes widened.

“Don’t you judge me. All of these things are necessary for my ongoing existence.”

“Of course they are, miss.” The man was so judging me. Bastard. “You carry a koozie around with you, I see.”

“It pays to be ready to party, Mr. Thayer.”

Damn that was hot. And for a novella Kylie Scott managed to pull off the slow burn to perfection. I really love these 1001 nights novellas. They are the perfect way to discover a new author or series or just the perfect little cherry on top of a much loved series.

And although I adore Kylie Scott's writing I am only about half way through the stage dive series as I keep getting pulled away from them and since I know I will love them I can save them for book slumps. But I read the blurb for this one and I really had to read it right now.

Mae was awesome. I loved that she was a plus sized model with her own lingerie line. And despite the drama she had going on she wasn't a drama queen or a victim about it all. She just pulled up her pretty lace panties and got on with living her life without being stupid about it.

But damn was Ziggy hot. I loved that he was so stoic and professional until he could let his guard down. And once he did he was all in for Mae. There's just something so sweet about the strong silent type being so emotionally open that works.

I really loved the story and it was a perfect length. Enough depth and story-line without any unnecessary information or drama. The perfect read for a lazy Sunday.

I have wanted to read this series since I picked up my first Kylie Scott book but I am not a massive fan of rockstar romance. I don’t know why not I used to love them so even though I knew I would love them I just seem to have a mental block on picking them up. Then I read Play and loved it and I already knew I liked Mal so I thought I would jump straight into Lick so I one clicked it and then it sat on my kindle for months.

And the annoying thing is everyone told me how much I would love it, I knew I would love it yet I let it grow dust bunnies. So when I got it as part of a challenge I finally picked it up and by the end of the first chapter I was so hooked.

Anne was perfection. I really loved her so hard. She was so caring and giving and even though she was all fan girl over Mal she didn’t let him walk all over her. And man I can completely understand going fangirl over Mal.

Mal was like an overgrown puppy. He just bounced right on in there without thinking and didn’t think past what he was chasing after at the time. He was super sweet but he was also super clueless. Luckily that combination worked for him and it helped that he was hot as hell and owned his fuck ups.

And of course I loved seeing the stage dive crew and I am seriously looking forward to when I finally get around to the next book in the series.

So I have discovered that my taste in books has changed quite a bit over the last few years, a lot of it I noticed but some of those changes have snuck up on me with me being very quietly in denial over it. But today I had this massive aha moment. See there I was on a plane with four hours stretching in front of me and a kindle full of books and no idea what to read. First world problems for sure. But with everything in airplane mode and having put half of the books on my kindle years ago I was honestly lost. I couldn’t read anything that would have me a blubbering mess (half my kindle) and I didn’t want anything that would have me noticeably squirming in my seat (a quarter of my kindle) so those books were narrowing down fast.

Then I saw Lick. I LOVE Kylie Scott. My friends LOVE the Stage Dive series. Why haven’t I read it anytime over the last five and a half years? Well I had to admit it, the thought of a rock star romance freaked me out. The last few (dozen) I read when I was obsessed with them had groupies and such and I have gotten soft. I want romance and love, not random skank banging on buses. Now before you crucify me I knew that wasn’t the case here but I had a mental block that I had no choice but to hurdle today.

And I am so freaking glad I did. David and Evelyn were just what I needed. The book made my flight fly and I actually held up disembarking to finish my chapter only to jump straight on my hotel bed and dive back in. The whole book had a great mix of lust, love, drama, angst and just all around great writing. But I still have to steel myself to read the rest of the series. Which feels so unnatural to me since it should be a no brainer. God I annoy me.

Anyway this is supposed to be about Lick and not about my pending insanity. So, David, damn just the thought of him makes me a little squirmy. I could feel the pheromones wafting off him. But OMG why are men such idiots? Seriously? I wanted to flick him in the forehead so he could try pull his head out of his arse. And Ev was so much stronger than I expected. But then I hold grudges and am stupidly stubborn so maybe she is just more forgiving and mature than me.

I am so in lust with Mal. And since I read the Dive Bar series I have this burning desire to read his book even though I can’t actually remember why the feeling was so strong from the minute his name was written so maybe I best get those big girl panties and try dive back into the rest of the series. But for now I am going to go to sleep thinking about David’s shirtless cuddles.
