Dear Letter Girl, I need to see you. When can we meet?

Her response never came. My secret pen pal with a dirty mind has ghosted me. I've roped Jules, my sweet as pie next door neighbor, to help me track her down.

There's only one problem—I'm falling for her. The tortoise shell glasses, out of this world curves and delicious treats are making the search for The Letter Girl even harder.

My notes were supposed to be a one time thing. A little too much wine and naughty thoughts on a winter's night. I never thought Berk would write back. I wanted to tell him it was me, but the fear of rejection kept my lips sealed.

Now he’s enlisted my help to track down The Letter Girl and our search has him hot on my, ahem, her trail.

She's the girl next door.

He's my secret pen pal.

Truth is on a collision course with their hearts and it’s only a matter of time before one of them gets wrecked...

A giddy laugh bubbled up from deep down. I snuck a glance at myself in the mirror again. I was a lumpy diva, but, fuck it, I was a badass, too. And I was slowly skidding closer to the ground as the sweat that gathered behind my knee loosened my grip.
Every move I nailed got me a little closer to appreciating how far I’d come. From the first days of slipping off trying to do a basic spin with my feet planted firmly on the floor, to being a diva. This was my freaking body and I loved the shit out of it.
And if I kept telling myself that, maybe one day I’d believe it.
I lowered myself onto my bedroom floor with a flourish, throwing in one more spin for my imaginary audience.
The song ended and I braced my hands on my hips, panting and sweating like I’d run a 5k, with a grin so damn wide I felt it in my toes. Jumping up and down, I gave myself a high five and a few club-worthy woos. It made it harder to figure out if I was doing the tricks one hundred percent correctly, but I sure as hell wasn’t going to record myself to watch later or head to a pole dancing studio with full-wall mirrors. I wasn’t at that level of okay with me in all my glory—yet.
I flopped onto my bed and stared up at the ceiling. My hip-hugging short shorts and sports bra gave me little coverage, but pole dancing wasn’t exactly about modesty. I’d given it a try at the urging of my therapist during freshman year and hell if it hadn’t helped—some. It was a way for me to build strength, body confidence, and maybe attempt to feel a little sexy.
The door slammed downstairs and I shot up from the bed.
“Jules!” Berk’s unmistakable call sent me from pole dancing heart racing to ‘floor it, Louise,’ careening toward a cliff. I shot up and fell off my bed, rattling the perfume bottles on my dresser. Scrambling off the floor, I grabbed my sweatpants and tugged them on, hopping from foot to foot and sounding like I’d taken up bowling in my bedroom. I snagged my glasses off my desk and shoved them onto my face.
Berk was probably wondering how I’d trapped a wild animal up in my room. I grabbed my long sleeved T-shirt and hoodie off the back of my chair even though it was August. The fabric clung to my sweaty skin and I probably had a sweat-stashe going on, but that was better than him walking up here and finding me half naked. A panic spiral shot through me and I got dressed even quicker and threw open my door.
My feet barely touched any of the steps as I flew downstairs.
“Berk.” I fell into the kitchen, bracing my arm against the doorway. The butterflies in my stomach were replaced by a whole freaking safari. I tightened my lips to what I hoped was a non-serial killer level of smile. My heart was glowing like a spotlight, so I wrapped my arms tighter around myself. Tingles tiptoed up and down my spine at the sight of his floppy hair and jeans that hugged his ass and trim waist better than mine ever fit me.
His head shot up and the half of the cookie sticking out of his mouth broke off and dropped onto the counter. “There you are.” His words were muffled behind two manhole cover-sized cookies.
“Did you think I was hiding in my cookie box?”
“Is that what you’re calling it these days?” Killer smile and a direct hit. “The old cookie box.”

Author Bio

Maya Hughes, that's me!, can often be found sneaking in another chapter while hiding in the bathroom from her kids! :-) I'm a romance writer who loves taking inspiration from everyday life, namely my husband and biggest fan. Inspiration also strikes when I hear a song, meet someone new or daydream while at soccer practice.

I love writing stories that capture the possibilities of the paths less travelled and enjoy experiencing life through my characters’ eyes.

I'm the mom of three little ones, the wife to an amazing husband and also work full time. Some of my favorite things are cupcakes, cinnamon rolls, white wine, laughing until I can't breathe, traveling with my family and Jeff Goldblum.

I have been dying for the story of Jules and Berk since the very beginning. Their backstory was so perfect and sweet, I just knew I was going to love their story. They were both such beautiful characters and I loved them individually but I knew they would be amazing together. The whole series has been one of those that I am holding my breath waiting for the next one but this one in particular feels like I have been waiting for it forever.

First I need to express how beautiful Jules is. Inside and out she is just sugar and spice and all things nice. And having to live through her shrew mother’s judgment and bullshit I could understand her being so self conscious and afraid of judgement. But she put so much effort into getting passed all of that and making herself happy with herself. And she came out of this so strong and knew what she deserved and went after it. But she did it in such a sweet way because she was such a genuinely sweet and caring person who wanted everyone around her to have nothing but the best.

Berk was perfect for her. He had come through so much and still had his own demons he was fighting. But he knew how awesome Jules was, his only hesitation was that he was so caught up on The Letter Girl.

Their story was all that I had hoped for and I loved every part of it. The only problem I have now is that there are so many more stories I need Maya Hughes to write. I mean there’s Marissa and LJ obviously. But I also need Max and the mystery man and Johanssen and Willa. I just can’t wait for the next book regardless of who we get I just need it now.

How can you lose someone you’ve never met? The Letter Girl had careened into my life like a damn smash and grab pro and wormed her way into my heart before I knew what happened.
She was everything I’d ever wanted in a girl. Hot as hell. Smart and caring. The slow slide of the notes from X-rated to something more caught me off guard, but she became someone I could talk to. Someone I could share parts of myself that I didn’t share with other people. Even if she didn’t know everything about my past, she knew more than most.
No one wanted to be sexy pen pals with a former foster kid with almost no one in the whole world. Nah, that was for the college senior, soon to be pro athlete.
Don’t ever let anyone see things bother you; I learned that in foster home number four. If everything’s a joke, there’s nothing they can do to hurt you, but losing TLG when I thought I’d finally found someone who knew me for me and actually gave a shit? That hurt. It was an unexpected squeeze on my heart every so often that made it hard to breathe.
Jules slid her hand closer, herky-jerky like she was in a stop motion animation movie before it finally landed on top of mine with a gentle pat. “Is it really that important for you to find her?”
I shrugged. “Maybe not. She probably got tired of trying to figure out my fucking chicken scratch.” I forced out a laugh through the tightness in my chest.
“Once the season starts things will be crazy for you, right?”
“You’re right. I guess I’m fixating because not much else is going on.” No, this would always be a question I needed answered. Who is TLG and did all the things we’d written about mean as much to her as they meant to me?

Dear Jerk Across the Street, sorry for accidentally walking in on you and catching an eyeful of your—equipment. And hard pass on the open invitation to join you in the shower “anytime”, A-hole.

That’s the note I should’ve written. Instead I sent a pleasant and apologetic version.

Had I known Phoenix “Nix” Russo would’ve been the neighbor from hell, I’d have told him right where he could shove my words.

Nix is the big man on campus with everyone lined up at his games to make sure he knows it. Sure, he’s got piercing green eyes, abs that don’t quit and a smile that could set fire to a set of panties from a hundred yards away, but he’s also the biggest pain in my ass.

Dear Pink-Haired Menace, learn how to take a joke and stop being such a kill-joy...

Elle Masterson called the cops on one of my parties—again. My sweet talking usually gets me out of trouble, but this time it got me into a nice pair of silver handcuffs. Now I’m on a reputation rehab tour with a stop at a spring break community service project.

Guess who’s my new boss?

Now we’re shoulder to shoulder, sweaty, tired and…she’s not anything like I expected. There might just be a heart under that hardass exterior. She’s invading my dreams and I can’t shake the feeling she’s the key to unlocking a piece of me that I’ve hidden away.

It’s only a matter of time until she finds out why I’m really here.

Maybe I can break through her walls and into her heart before that happens...one screw at a time.

“I’ve missed this,” he whispered against my lips.
“Me too.”
His fingers tightened around the hair at the base of my neck. Tilting my head to the side, he ran his lips over my skin, sending shivers down my spine.
One second we were standing in the middle of the pitch-black room and the next the whole world tilted. I landed against Nix’s solid chest.
“Are you okay?” I tried to push myself up.
He tightened his hold around me. “The stress balls, sweatpants, and t-shirts cushioned my fall.”
“Thank you for today.” I peppered his jaw with kisses.
“Thank you for letting me do this for you.” The outline of his erection pressed against the front of my mound. Just one inch higher…
He wrapped his hands around my waist and lifted me, perfecting the angle.
I shuddered and ground my hips against him. Someone walked by the door, but we didn’t stop—couldn’t stop.
His hands cupped my ass, dragging me harder against him. The texture of his jeans added extra sensation against my clit. I was on fire for him through two layers of clothes.
My short gasps and his low groans were the only sounds in the room other than the fabric friction.
“We should get back out there.” I raked my teeth along the side of his neck.
“You’re probably right.” His hips shot up and I wanted to scream in frustration that he wasn’t inside me, but I didn’t want to break from the thrumming pleasure rushing all over my body.
“In a second.”
“In a minute.” His tongue danced with mine in time to the rhythm of our hips. Laughter rang out in the hallway behind the door, but I couldn’t stop. If someone came in, there wasn’t anything that would stop me from dry-humping Nix into next week.

Author Bio

Maya Hughes has always loved romance novels. One look at her Kindle is confirmation. She started writing her first romance novel while pregnant with her third child and she hasn’t looked back. Now, her romance writing addiction has replaced her romance reading addiction.

You can find her writing on her foldable keyboard and phone anytime inspiration strikes. Her sweet and steamy stories range from rockstars to small towns and everything in between. When she’s not writing, she’s playing with her three kids, running errands or vegging on the couch with the love of her life and biggest fan, her husband.

This is the second book in the series and I can say it can be read as a standalone as all I can remember about the first one was that I loved it so hard I begged for this one. And I couldn't be happier. From the first page I couldn't put it down and I am dying to get my hands on the rest of the series already.

But right now I need to gush about Nix. He was the perfect new adult college sports hero. Even when he was being a cocky arsehole at the beginning I knew I was going to love him. And he just got better with every page. He made mistakes but he went above and beyond to fix them. And when Elle made mistakes he forgave quickly.

Elle had so much on her shoulders I was just waiting for her to snap and explode all over everyone. But she held it together and I loved that she took a leap of faith after everything she had been through.

The secondary characters were great but I felt like it was one big tease for the next few books. I am dying to get Berk and Jules story. I think that's going to be amazing and of course Marisa and LJ and I am wondering if there are one or two other couples with stories of their own.

Although that doesn't matter because it's Berk  and Jules next and I am praying that next is soon. Really really soon please.

That book was absolutely the perfect first introduction to Maya Hughes. I saw a sign up to promote a later book in the series and since it sounded like my cup of tea I went to check it out on GoodReads. And after reading the blurb and some great reviews I discovered it was on KU.

Since I have been in a little bit of a book slump I was a little tentative but figured I would read a few chapters before I crashed for the night. Umm yeah. So 50% later at midnight I forced myself to put the book down and go to sleep.

Both characters were really likable and the secondary characters were just as awesome. And despite it being a new adult story with a sports hero this missed all the usual cliches.

Reece and Seph were so opposite yet they complimented each other so perfectly and I loved everything about them as a couple. The only thing that didn't work for me was we were teased with Reece' s past but it wasn't really clear exactly what happened. Although I am pretty sure I connected all the dots correctly it would have been great to have it confirmed.

And now I am going off to stalk the sign up for Nix's story.
