From the New York Times bestselling author of Suddenly Royal comes the first in a sparkling new series about America’s favorite royal—the First Daughter.
Everyone makes mistakes, especially in college. But when you’re the daughter of the President of the United States, any little slip up is a huge embarrassment. Maddie McGuire’s latest error in judgment lands her in police custody, giving the press a field day. Agreeing to do community service as penance and to restore her tattered reputation, Maddie never dreams incredibly good looking but extremely annoying vice president’s son, Jake Simmon, will be along for the ride.
Recently returning from Afghanistan with a life-altering injury, Jake is wrestling with his own demons. He doesn’t have the time or patience to deal with the likes of Maddie. They’re like oil and water and every time they’re together, it’s combustible. But there’s a thin line between love and hate, and it’s not long before their fiery arguments give way to infinitely sexier encounters.
When Jake receives devastating news about the last remaining member of his unit, the darkness he’s resisted for so long begins to overwhelm him. Scared to let anyone close, he pushes Maddie away. But she isn’t about to give up on Jake that easily. Maddie’s fallen for him, and she’ll do anything to keep him from the edge as they both discover that love is a battlefield and there are some fights you just can’t lose.

My Review
Excerpt
“Have you been crying?” Warm fingers touched my cheek and I jerked in surprise at the sparks that danced through my blood. I couldn’t remember if he had ever touched me except for obligatory dances at celebrations and fund- raisers. “What happened? Are you okay?”“No, I’m fine.” I stepped out of his reach and rubbed under my eyes. Tearing my gaze from his I leaned over and picked up his cane. “It’s allergies.”
“We’ve known each other too long for you to lie to me.” He let his hand fall back to his side. I handed him the cane and stepped back. “Someone told you that I was on my way, huh? We all know how much you hate me. I’m surprised you didn’t jump out of the window.”
“It was an option.” I rolled my eyes. I guess I wasn’t the only one that remembered our last meeting hadn’t been pleasant. “I also considered hiding in the closet, but was too slow.”
There! Take that, perfect Jake Simmon. I was quick on my feet today.
“So, you know why I’m here.” The way his eyes ran over me as if taking stock was obnoxious.
“I’m your body guard. When the crazy women start running after you, I’m to dive in the way.” And damn if they wouldn’t come running when they saw how he looked all grown up and rough around the edges.
“I’m glad they have a plan.” He scratched his chin. “Getting bombarded with underwear and bras is a health issue.”
“If they got to know you, it wouldn’t be a problem.” I rolled my eyes.
“What does that mean?” His head cocked to the side.
“I thought you lost your leg, not your brain.” My eyes widened, but it was too late to take it back. Why was it that I said the most horrible things around him? Even when we’d been younger I’d had diarrhea of the mouth. Especially around Jake.
He threw his head back and laughed. “I don’t think they’re after my brain, Maddie. Thankfully the part they’re most interested in is still fully functional.”
His lazy smile and sparkling eyes had me swallowing hard.
Heat crept up my neck and I fought to not look away. “Well, good for you.”

First I need to admit that I am a Nicole Chase
virgin, I had no idea what to expect from this novel. But I thought it sounded
like a fun, enemies to friends kind of thing with some laughs and lightness and
a little bit of drama and emotion.
Damn I should be sick of always being wrong but
it feels like I keep getting some great reads out of my mistakes. This book
started out sweet and funny and I loved the instant chemistry between Jake and
Maddy, so much so that when Jake did someone stupid after we first saw them
together I got a little pissed off and struggled to get into the story.
Luckily Maddy was such an awesome character that
I didn’t put the book down in a big sulk because I wanted to see what was going
to happen next for her. Maddy was a character I could really get behind,
despite having literally nothing in common with her lifestyle I felt like I
knew her well and I really did enjoy every moment of getting to know her.
Jake is a bit more complex. While I did like a
lot about him and I did feel so devastated for everything he had gone through
and the demons he was fighting I did have quite a few moments where I wanted to
smack him in the face and find Maddy someone better. I loved that once he
decided to claim Maddy he didn’t show any hesitation and he went out of his way
to make her feel special and cared for.
But here comes the but. When shit hit the fan as
it often does (guess it would be a pretty boring book if it didn’t) I felt like
Maddy had too much to deal with alone. I get that Jake had his own issues he
needed to deal with but I felt like poor Maddy deserved so much more than he
gave. And while he did pull his head out of his arse I just felt like it wasn’t
enough. But then I am a vengeful bitch so I expect a lot when it comes to
making up for mistakes so maybe that is just me being a little too demanding.
Guess you will need to grab the book and meet
Maddy and see if Jake was all that you would want for her and let me know.

Prologue
Although
one of the men seated owns the home this beautiful room is in, he is not
sitting in a place of power behind his mammoth hand-carved mahogany desk, but
rather both men are seated in matching wingback chairs covered in the softest
of plaid cashmeres and are situated near the room’s French doors, which
overlook the estate’s vast grounds.
“We
have some loose ends to tie up regarding Montrovia,” the owner of the home says
after taking a sip of amber-colored liquid from a heavy crystal tumbler.
“We
shouldn’t have trusted the girl,” the other man says.
“Easy
to say in retrospect, especially considering she came very close to succeeding.
If she would have become Queen, it would have made things much easier for us.
We will prevail, regardless.”
“What
is our next course of action, then?”
“We
continue with our plan,” the owner states. “Although, I’m afraid there will
have to be a few slight variations.”
“Does
one of those variations have to do with why the Eagle wasn’t present at our
meeting today?” the man asks, the understanding of an unusual event earlier in
the day showing in his furrowed brow.
“He
isn’t doing what he promised. Now that he controls the world’s most powerful
military, he seems to have forgotten who put him into power.”
“That
was a very expensive endeavor.”
The
owner of the home nods in agreement. “One of which we are not reaping the
reward from. So, I’m afraid we have no choice. We must liquidate our bad
investment.”
The
man sets his drink down, trying to keep his hand from shaking, knowing it could
just as easily be him if he dared to cross the man in front of him. “But he’s
our friend.”
“Something
he has also forgotten. Do it. And I only want the best, for obvious reasons.”
“Sadly,
the best is dead.”
“Are
you referring to The Priest?”
“Yes.
He was killed after the Eagle’s father hired him for a hit then double crossed
him.”
“I
don’t believe he’s dead. Find him.”
“I’m
sure we can find someone equally as talented—”
“I
want The Priest and no one else,” the owner interrupts.
How
in the world am I supposed to hire a dead man? he thinks, but he doesn’t dare
say.
“It’s
going to be dangerous for us to even try to find him, but I will see what I can
come up with. What if he is still alive, but says no?”
“You
will make him an offer he cannot refuse. And see if he will give us a group
discount regarding the outstanding Montrovian situation.”
***
The
assassin known as The Priest enters an empty bar in France. The
hole-in-the-wall drinking establishment is supposed to be open this afternoon,
but the owner just hung the closed sign on the door.
“What
is this nonsense about an offer?” the assassin asks, freaking out a little.
“Everyone thinks I’m dead. We’ve worked hard to establish ourselves here. How
did they contact you?”
“Through
a secure network. I left a few trusted assets in place in case we ever needed
the money.”
“We
could be traced though that.”
“No,
we can’t. I’m good at what I do. Are you interested in hearing the offer, or
not?”
“It
doesn’t matter how much it is. I’m not interested.”
“So
are you saying that fifteen million dollars wouldn’t sway you?”
“Fifteen
million? Who the hell is the target?”
“It’s
a series of three hits, but they have only revealed the first one.” He whispers
the man’s name.
“You’ve
got to be kidding. No way.”
“This
money could set us both up for life.”
“We’re
already set up for life. Sort of. Besides, I retired. With good reason.”
“They
will go as high as twenty.”
“You
know how well-guarded a man of his stature is.”
“Are
you saying no because you don’t want to do it, or because you don’t think you
can do it?”
“Whether
or not I can do it is not the question. I always complete my tasks. However, in
this case, getting away with it would be another story. I’d have a whole
country after me. And they’d find you first, since you are the one brokering
the deal.”
“You
don’t trust my skills?”
“All
I know is that I’m lucky to be alive. It’s been over six years since I was
double-crossed, and you know as well as I do, that when Lara was killed it
should have been me driving. I had gotten careless with my cover.”
“That
was four years ago.”
“Two
years after I was presumed dead. Men like that never forget. For all we know,
this could be their way of setting me up.” He pushes himself away from the bar.
“No. We can’t risk it.”
“If
we could get them to twenty-five million, we could buy our own island and live
in paradise forever.”
“We
already live in paradise, my friend.”
“I’m
tired of running this bar.”
“This
bar is your cover. Hiding didn’t work before. Hiding in plain sight is. And we
will continue to make it work.”
“Whatever,”
the bartender says, his disappointment showing in both his expression and
gestures. But he does as told—logs into a secure network and declines the
offer.
He’s
surprised when there is an immediate response.
“They
just offered thirty million.”
He
shakes his head no.
The
bartender relays his decision, then his eyes go wide with shock.
“You
need to see this for yourself,” he says, handing him the laptop.
The
assassin reads the instant message.
Thirty
million is my final offer, but I suspect it’s not about the money. I have other
information that may interest you. The first target is not only a powerful
world leader, but he is the legacy of the man who double-crossed you six years
ago.
He’s
rereading it again just to be sure, when another message pops up.
Does
that change your mind?
The
assassin drains the beer in front of him. “Tell the man that it most certainly
does.”
Revenge won’t change
anything—or will it?

This seems to be the month for amazeballs books. It’s
like all my favorite authors got together to see if they could blow my mind
with their awesome.
It goes without saying that if Rebecca Yarros writes
it, I will read it. But damn did this book have all the action and emotion I
could handle and then some.
Wilder was everything I could ask for in a new adult
hero. Cocky, arrogant, wild, man whore who knows what he wants and gives his whole
heart and soul into getting it. He was so fearless and full of life it was hard
not to fall in love with him as soon as I met him. He is one of those people
who pulls you into his orbit without effort and I loved the fact that I could
feel the pull between Wilder and Leah from their first meeting.
Leah was struggling so hard to repair her broken
pieces and I loved that she never used everything she had gone through as an
excuse to avoid her feelings for Wilder. She was such an amazing character I
loved her as much as I loved Wilder. And despite a few tests and trials she
never made stupid drama or excuses, she just pulled up her big girl panties and
dealt with it. Her strength was awesome to watch.
There were a few things that upset me to no end and
for a while there I thought I might have to put the book down and walk away but
of course Rebecca is a goddess and she pulled me back to being on her stalker
list and I absolutely can’t wait to read the rest of the Renegades finding
their HEA.

One story. Two couples.
I fell in love with a man who didn’t exist.
What started out as romance ended in hell.
His words turned to razor blades.
His kisses converted to fists.
His embrace became my cage.
His body transformed into a weapon, stealing
parts of me until ultimately….
I broke.
I hated him.
My sole job in life became to protect our

I wasn’t sure I’d ever escape the prison he’d

I proposed on our first date.
She laughed and told me I was insane. Less than a day later,
she said yes.
It was a whirlwind, but we were happy…
Until we got greedy and wanted a family.
It was a life I couldn’t give her, not for lack of trying.
Fertility just wasn’t on our side. We sought out doctors and treatments. Spent
money we didn’t have. Lied to our families. Smiled for our friends. Put on a
brave face for a world that didn’t understand.
Finally, we were successful…
We were left broken, battered, and destroyed.
They say love is in the details, but it was the details that
ruined us.
This is the story of how I took back what had always been
mine.
The retrieval of my wife and our family.
